DLIS is the premier school of Library and Information Science in the State of Kerala . It was founded in 1961, as one of the earlier teaching and research departments of the University of Kerala, on the initiative of the then University Librarian, Professor K.A Isaac. Located in the University Library Building from its very inception, the Department has been conducting a variety of courses to train librarians to manage the libraries in their changing contexts and to extend the boundaries of the discipline through research leading to Ph.D. DLIS also undertakes research projects, continuing education programmes and extension activities and offers consultancy services.
